The non hardy plant collection at the JBG has some amazing plants within it. One of those specimens is a four metre tall Cycas circinalis. C. circinalis is an endangered species from Sputhern India, it is in cultivation but mostly in Hawaii. As it’s natural range is being further reduced by land clearance this cycad is under threat.
Moving the cycad out of its current greenhouse is in preparation for it to move into the JBG’s new tropical display house. The growing medium was switched from a heavy tufa mix to a lighter perlite tufa mix. The foliage and roots were pruned, mostly the clean out an awful mealy bug infestation in the crown. Now the plant is sitting happily outside.
