The northern entrance to the nursery is smelling rather awful right now. The culprit is Stapelia gigantea. Two plants are rewarding my tentative care with many blooms and the accompanying awful odour. The reason for the odour is to attract flies to pollinate the flowers. The scent resembles carrion but also has a methane scent to it. Despite the smell the large flowers look amazing. S. gigantea should look great in the new glasshouse arid zone.
